I haven’t been to a wedding in years. I love weddings, I’m in love with love, after all.
For the last three weeks it’s all I have talked about, mainly which dress should I wear and which shoes. The decision is either plum or navy. It’s four hours to go and I am inching towards navy.
Yesterday at work I was discussing at length the wedding of the century (their words not mine) that is today. They met last September, fell madly in love, moved in together and decided that they would get married in June this year. Then they thought, sod it, why wait, so pulled it forward.
The people in my office (all men) have been assisting me in my choices, trying to come along as my plus one, but I am already a plus one. It wasn’t until I spoke with some of my colleagues over the phone that I came across odd reactions. I work in construction and talk to the plant operators dozens of times a day and Friday’s conversations frequently involve weekend plans.
I wasted no time telling them allllll about it and two conversations stuck out.
Person One: What you doing this weekend
Me: Going to a wedding
Person One: Do you know the bride or groom
Me: Actually its two grooms, I have known one for over a decade.
Person One: How odd, why on earth do you want to go to that wedding?
Me: Sorry got to go, my other line is ringing, call you back later.
I wanted to reach down the phone line and shake him. Anyway conversation number two.
Person Two: Are you working this weekend?
Me: No, not my Saturday, I swapped to go to a wedding.
Person Two: Oooh, did you turn him down and now they are marrying someone else (he is a drama queen).
Me: No, I’m not his type, it’s a gay wedding.
Person Two: Oh, it’s one of those……he’s one of those…..
Me: You can say the words ya know, go one say them, say it.
Person two: I can say the words, my niece is…..is…..is one of those, she’s just had a baby with her…..her….sperm doner.
I rolled my eyes and ended the call.
I gave up after that. Why such a reaction to two people falling in love and getting married?
Bizarre.
Anyway, I am off to paint my nails, iron my dress and hope that I scrub up well.
Thanks for reading

Harper’s Motto: You will not be everybody’s favourite flavour, but that’s ok, because they will not always be your favourite flavour. Be who you want to be and you will attract the people who will support you no matter what.

Love is love. I don’t understand why in this day and age it is so unheard of to go to a gay wedding. My best friend is gay and if she found someone to spend the rest of her life with, I would support her in so many ways. Enjoy the wedding and forget the awful comments of small minded people.
